A celebration of inclusion and empowerment
Published on January 20, 2026
The City of Lakewood is announcing the return of the PossAbilities Expo on Saturday, Feb. 7, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Charles Whitlock Recreation Center. This free, community-focused event is designed to connect people of all ages and abilities with the vital and transformative resources available to them in the Lakewood area.
Hosted in celebration of Therapeutic Recreation Month, the expo serves as a comprehensive "one-stop shop" to engage directly with vendors offering expertise in adaptive sports, accessible healthcare, long-term funding solutions and specialized transportation services.
Event highlights and interactive programming
The expo goes beyond traditional booths by offering immersive experiences and expert-led sessions:
- Educational presentations: Ethan Cowan presents on how to achieve neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to make new connections and learn regardless of age or ability level.
- Active workshop: Join a high-energy, inclusive dance session with Feel the Beat, a studio renowned for making music and movement accessible through bone-conduction technology.
- Live demonstrations: Experience the latest in adaptive technology and athletics with interactive displays from the Denver Barbarians (wheelchair rugby), The Lockwood Foundation, Freedom Trax and DanceAbility.
Commitment to accessibility
To ensure a welcoming environment for every guest, the city has integrated several inclusive features:
- Sensory-friendly time: A dedicated quiet time is available 10-10:30 a.m. for those who prefer a reduced stimuli environment (preregistration required).
- On-site support: A designated sensory break space and complimentary noise-reducing headphones will be available throughout the duration of the event.
"The PossAbilities Expo is about more than just information; it’s about fostering a sense of belonging and showing our community that there are no limits to what can be achieved with the right support and tools," says Lakewood Recreation Coordinator Kayla White, who organizes this annual event.
