Police Information on Department of Homeland Security Activity
Published on January 30, 2026
The Lakewood Police Department’s (LPD) mission has not and will not change. The LPD is committed to upholding the highest standards to protect all members of the community from crime. It will continue to lead with dignity and respect for everyone as agents protect both civil rights and public safety.
Maintaining Public Safety, Peace and Order
The LPD’s primary mission is public safety and maintenance of peace and order. In the event of federal Department of Homeland Security operations or incidents that generate public concern or demonstrations, the LPD’s role is to ensure that everyone involved remains safe.
Such events can evoke strong emotions. The LPD’s approach focuses on de-escalation, crowd safety and the protection of constitutional rights, including the right to peaceful protest. Any acts of violence or threats to public safety would be addressed consistently with Colorado law and department policy.
Enforcement of Laws, Statutory Foundation
The LPD enforces all applicable laws impartially and without regard to the identity of any party involved. All agents are sworn to uphold the law and ensure that justice is applied fairly and without bias.
Current Colorado law restricts police cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. State law prevents local law enforcement from arresting or holding individuals based on civil immigration detainers, and it limits the sharing of personal information. The key laws include HB19-1124, which prohibits arrests and holds for civil immigration violations without a judicial warrant, and SB25-276, which further restricts the sharing of personal data and date of release. The LPD adheres to these state laws.
Identification and Face Coverings
The LPD recognizes the importance of transparency and accountability at all times. The department requires Lakewood agents to properly identify themselves during official duties and to wear department-issued uniforms, badges or other identifiers unless engaged in approved undercover operations. Lakewood Police agents are prohibited from wearing face coverings. Additionally, all agents utilize body-worn cameras to record all interactions with the public.
