Amache: Connecting the Pieces
Next date: Tuesday, February 09, 2027 | 12:00 AM
to Saturday, October 30, 2027 | 12:00 AM
Temporary exhibition on view February 9 through October 30 at the Heritage Lakewood Visitor Center.
Colorado's tenth largest city during World War II was Amache, a one-mile square incarceration facility on the High Plains. This exhibit, on loan from the University of Denver Museum of Anthropology, encourages dialogue about the history of the over 10,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry who lived there over the course of three years.
This exhibit developed from the Amache Community Archaeology Project, engaging students, scholars, and community members in collaboration to research, interpret and preserve the tangible history of Amache.
Text and photo from The University of Denver Museum of Anthropology. These volunteers working on the archaeological project were both incarcerated at Amache as young girls.
